BOXEO
Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym | Havana, Cuba
Grimy, sour, bare bones, real, raw, dirty…. the fight of the human spirit.

Nestled in the San Isidro neighborhood, the Rafael Trejo gym has roots dating back to the 1930s. Named after a Cuban law student, Rafael Trejo, who led protests against the Machado presidency, it has become a training ground for champions and a symbol of resilience. From 1968 to 2000, Cuban boxers linked to Rafael Trejo clinched more Olympic medals than any other country.
The gym fosters a sense of community, where veteran boxers share space alongside aspiring novices. This unique camaraderie makes it feel like an extended family home rather than a conventional boxing ring. As I had just serendipitously discovered this gym on one of my walks, it became a welcoming space for us to immerse ourselves and deeply engage in the rich Cuban boxing culture.
